Going Beyond The Typical Recreational Activities and Sports: Infusing Nature Based and Outdoor Skills for Children and Youth Programming

Most communities and schools have done such a remarkable job with developing their recreational and sports activities while still improving and tweaking their programming. However, providing an outlet and infusing outdoor experiential based programming and skill training only compliments and supports recreation and leisure activities in summer camps, pre-schools and community centres. Research, educators and parents have been shouting out the importance of creating outdoor education learning and skill building opportunities for children and youth. Come and learn some basic outdoor skills that can be taught to all ages from knots, shelter building, orienteering, urban parks nature based games and activities, cloud reading and more. The outside classroom is waiting for those ready to learn about outdoor community based recreation.

Workshop Presenter: Jeff Willis

As a skilled energetic facilitator and speaker, Jeff has spent over 25 years working with a variety of organizations using supportive, innovative and experiential techniques to improve a centre’s team collaboration and connecting the dots of experiential play. His passion is derived from his breadth of understanding of experiential education, his various senior roles within the outdoor recreation industry, successful entrepreneurial endeavours and a committed community advocate.

Developing Social Skills

Appropriate social skills are difficult for many kids. This workshop provides strategies for guiding children towards healthy friendships.

Workshop Presenter: P.J. Prinsloo

P.J. has worked with children and youth for 19 years. He began this journey with the Attorney General’s Office of B.C. as a youth facilitator speaking at schools throughout the province on the topics anti-violence and anti-racism. For many years, P.J, pursued a growing acting career while working as a youth leader at Jericho Kids Club. This is where his passion for youth work formed into a life purpose. The combination of his experience at JKC, his acting background and many psychology classes inspired a unique and revolutionary approach that eventually became known as The Awareness Module. P.J.’s acting background and cutting edge approach makes his workshops engaging, informative and inspiring.
